Stop and thank God for being present with you today. Ask for God’s guidance as you hear God’s voice through scripture and the writer.

To the leader: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.
1 Answer me when I call, O God of my right!
You gave me room when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.
2 How long, you people, shall my honor suffer shame?
How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies?Selah
3 But know that the Lord has set apart the faithful for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.
4 When you are disturbed, do not sin;
ponder it on your beds, and be silent.Selah
5 Offer right sacrifices,
and put your trust in the Lord.
6 There are many who say, “O that we might see some good!
Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!”
7 You have put gladness in my heart
more than when their grain and wine abound.
8 I will both lie down and sleep in peace;
for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.
Reflect
Let me read your mail for just a minute. You have a smartphone and take your phone to bed with you, you stare at the glowing screen, scrolling through social media until your eyes start to droop, and then you put your phone on the charger and fall asleep. Did I get that right? I’m sure I did.
I am not a prophet nor am I the son of a prophet, but I do that too, and what happens when we scroll on social media? We see clearly the ills of the world. Whether it’s your cousin airing their dirty laundry about their baby daddy on Facebook or whether it’s that news source that you hate-spewing their lies and rhetoric, it all goes into the file labeled “Dumpster Fire.”
The world is messed up and wrong, and part of us knows that it shouldn’t be this way. Our temptation is to jump in the comment section and correct it as if our opinion is going to change anything, but that’s not what the psalmist tells us. The psalmist says, “When you are disturbed, do not sin; ponder it on your beds, and be silent. Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord.” (Psalm 4:4-5)
The psalmist says, “Don’t sin. Go to bed. Think through it, and let God deal with it.” You’re not going to fix the world. Fixing the world is too heavy of a burden for you to bear, and it’s not your responsibility. Adrian Rogers once said in a sermon that “our only responsibility is our response to God’s ability.” Go to bed tonight, and trust God with tomorrow.
Pray
O God, life is hard, but You have said that Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. We are weary of carrying the heavy burdens of the world and long to carry the light burden that You offer to us. Take our burden from us and give us Your burden. Let us carry the load that You have for us and not the load that we create for ourselves. In the name of Your Precious and Holy Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Go with God!
