A Psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
3 he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.
Reflect
When many of us hear Psalm 23 we immediately think of funeral or memorial services, I know I do. This passage of scripture is filled with uplifting words affirming God’s attributes as comforter, protector, and provider, words that fit perfectly during the celebration of a person’s life. However, Psalm 23 does not only have to be remembered as the passage of scripture that accompanies the loss of a loved one. We have all found ourselves in a place that we could describe as “the darkest valley,” this scripture reminds us that even in times of deep sorrow and trouble that the Creator is still with us! Today let your hearts be filled with thanksgiving knowing that God is not in some distant land waiting for us to move into the afterlife, but is with you today, tomorrow, and all the days to come comforting, protecting, and providing.
Pray
Creator God, remind me through times of trial that you have never left me alone. Remind me that when things seem darkest, your light can never be snuffed out. Amen
Go with God!
