Yesterday, we talked about martyrs and how they have to pay a price for their faith. I will often hear someone arrogantly say I would never deny my faith, or how dumb were Adam and Eve, or any other person in the Bible. We see this, especially with youth. I would never deny my faith. I would go to jail for my faith. In this passage, Peter says he would never leave Jesus’ side, and we know that not only does Peter flee he fulfills Jesus’ prophecy and denies Jesus three times. Peter is one of Jesus’ closest disciples and he did this. Sometimes we are overly harsh on people in history.  We act like they were navigating with the hindsight that we now have. When we deal with those that came before us, we are to learn and do better, but let us never get so arrogant that we think we are without weakness or sin apart from God’s indwelling of the Holy Spirit.  We would be even more broken and fallen than we are.  It is not our strength but it is God’s within us.  Remember that even though Peter fled, denied, and hid, but when filled with the Holy Spirit he also went forth and preached boldly, was jailed and as tradition has passed down Peter was crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as his Lord Jesus Christ.
