42 So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43 But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
Reflect
Have you ever been in a workplace, a club, or even your church where someone who had authority was quick to let everyone know it! That’s not a very nice place to be in. It certainly makes for difficult working situations, and even harder in the church.
Jesus reminded his disciples in our scripture today that His kingdom is the complete opposite of what they think it should and most certainly what was modeled. Servant leadership is the key. The first being last.
This is the opposite of our humanness. You only need to turn on the TV, watch a news channel, or pick up a magazine to see what our human behavior is. We want to be large and in charge and to let the whole world know that’s who we are.
Jesus says even the Son of Man came to be a servant to all. Let’s be honest, this is hard! This is a difficult thing for us to emulate and to strive towards. The world pulls us in the wrong direction. Leading from the position of a servant means that through our actions, and our interactions we get the opportunity….catch that word, we get the opportunity to display the love of Christ with all. Take your chance today!
Pray
Holy God who came and served, help us serve others in the same way. Not pushing, shoving, tearing, and clawing our way to the top of the heap. But serving, loving, displaying, caring, and being compassionate for each of our fellow brothers and sisters. Help us be like you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Go with God!
