24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in, they did not find the body. 4 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. 5 The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? Over the last 15 years of pastoring, this verse has wormed into my heart and mind. Through those years of pastoral counseling and shepherding I think about that question the angels asked, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?”
I think the most tragic thing I have run into as a pastor is that people have set their goals on “earthly things” and they have achieved their goal…but they are depressed and empty. In a way, they have sought life through the pursuit of dead things like money, relationships, and power. These things do not give life. They ensnare us in a cyclical rat race always seeking more and never finding fulfillment.
St Augustine so long ago said, “Thou created us for thyself and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee, O Lord.” My prayer for all who are reading this is that you cease trying to find life from death and that you point others to find life in Jesus Christ.
Pray
Help us, O God, to seek first the Kingdom and Your righteousness. In Jesus’s name. Amen
