A Song of Ascents.
1 How very good and pleasant it is
when kindred live together in unity!
2 It is like the precious oil on the head,
running down upon the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down over the collar of his robes.
3 It is like the dew of Hermon,
which falls on the mountains of Zion.
For there the Lord ordained his blessing,
life forevermore.
Reflect
Unity. If there is one thing we can be unified on (pun intended), it’s that we could all use a little more unity these days, right? It certainly feels like we are more divided than ever across every possible spectrum.
David knew a thing or two about being divided, especially within his own household. Perhaps this made him extra grateful in the moments when he experienced the pleasantness of kindred living together in unity. As he describes it, unity is like a precious oil, a balm overflowing, a dew falling down over the mountain.
But how can we live in unity? Two points of consideration: First, start with prayer. I myself often forget or overlook this step, but it is truly essential. Second, keep the main thing the main thing. Will we agree on everything? Will we agree on all the details? Absolutely not. But if we try to focus on the main thing, this will certainly help us as we strive for unity.
Unity this side of Heaven is extraordinarily difficult. But we see the message over and over (and over again) throughout all of scripture that we should constantly strive for it.
Pray
Father, we ask that you give us a spirit that seeks unity. In a world that tries to divide us, we know that unity comes from You. We pray for unity in the church, our denomination, our families, communities, nations and the world. Help the actions we take today make us more unified than we were yesterday. In Your name, Amen.
