Matthew 12:9-14
Reflect
Jesus challenged the Pharisees all the time. They understood the law but didn’t get it. They knew every dot and tittle but missed the point. The Sabbath was Holy because it was a day meant to reflect on the awesomeness of God. A day out of our busy normal week to remember who created, that we were created, that the creation was good, and to give the Creator praise and honor. Jesus healed this man’s withered hand, restored him. And why did the Pharisees get upset? Was it because he was healed? No, it was because Jesus healed on the Sabbath. He “worked” instead of following the letter of law and doing nothing. The Pharisees were so wrapped up the details, instead they should have been praising God for restoring something he created.
We too can get so focused on the details that we forget the true purpose. We can hide behind “church” work as a safety blanket and not recognize the awesomeness of God in what we are doing. Have you ever been so focused on a particular “mission” that your church is doing, making sure that everything is executed properly that you forget the real reason you are doing it?
Take a deep breath and remember that in all things we should be glorifying the Creator.
Pray
Loving God, forgive us when we like the Pharisees forget to focus on you. Praise you Lord! For your goodness, your mercy, your compassion, and your love for each and every one of us. Help us to remember you, to glorify you, to care for each other as you care for us. In Jesus name, Amen.
Go with God!
