Reflect
When my daughter was very small, I discovered her hiding under the table eating Nestle’s Quick. She had a spoon and the open can of Quick. She had chocolate running down both sides of her mouth. When I asked if she was eating Quick out of the can, she told me she was not. She was punished for lying to me not for eating the chocolate. (I had been known to eat a spoonful of the mix on occasions.) Years later the lesson was so well learned that my daughter blurted out to another Girl Scout, “Whatever you do, don’t lie to him.”
The story of Ananias and Sapphira is a rather shocking story. It seems rather harsh. They sold a piece of property and kept part of the proceeds. Yet, they gave a large part of it to help with communal needs. They were being generous and just fell dead. Apparently, they needed to have been caught eating chocolate out of the can.
They lied about giving all the proceeds to the community. God sees all the evidence of our wrongdoings. It does not do any good to try to lie about it. Whatever you do, don’t lie to God.
Pray
Dear God, sometimes we think we can lie to you or hide our sin from you. We know that is a silly notion, but still, we lie like Ananias and Sapphira or try to hide like Adam and Eve. We know that you give us forgiveness when we ask. Forgive us, cleanse us, renew us, and strengthen us. In the name of Christ, I pray. Amen.
Go with God!
