5 Now you are walled around with a wall;
siege is laid against us;
with a rod they strike the ruler of Israel
upon the cheek.
2 But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah,
who are one of the little clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to rule in Israel,
whose origin is from of old,
from ancient days.
3 Therefore he shall give them up until the time
when she who is in labor has brought forth;
then the rest of his kindred shall return
to the people of Israel.
4 And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord,
in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great
to the ends of the earth;
5 and he shall be the one of peace.
If the Assyrians come into our land
and tread upon our soil,
we will raise against them seven shepherds
and eight installed as rulers.
Reflect
Ever notice that there are many heroes that are small or underestimated. Wonderdog, Antman, and other examples. And we know that it takes faith the size of a mustard seed to move a mountain. We also read about the great heroes that came from the unlikeliest of places. Jesus is one of those persons. Jesus came from the smallest clan of the smallest nation. Jesus became the greatest among us, but not to beat up on the bullies of the world. If you need a hero, who ‘you gonna’ call? You don’t shine the bat signal up in the sky. And the image associated with the Savior of the world, the King of Kings, Lord of Lords is not of a man wearing a cape, standing with his hands on his waist. The image that God chose for the Savior of the world is of a man carrying a shepherd’s crook. And while that may not seem like a strong, successful image to use, think about this: I would be at least somewhat fearful to approach Superman or any of the other superheroes or war heroes. But I would feel safe to approach a Shepherd. And that’s what God intended: a Savior Whom anyone can approach and strike up a conversation, or share a problem; a Savior we can get close enough to so to hear Him say, in His Shepherd’s voice, “Come, my child, you are forgiven. You are home”
Pray
Holy One, speak to the woman or man reading this right now who is afraid to approach You because You seem too scary. Help them, Father, to see Jesus the Shepherd when they look to You, and say, “Oh, so that’s what You look like!”
Go with God!
