1 Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
or sit in the seat of scoffers;
2 but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.
3 They are like trees
planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.
4 The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6 for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
Reflect
I struggle making snack stops at gas stations. Anytime my family and I go on any kind of a trip, before I ever go inside a gas station I have to make my mind up beforehand what I’m going in after just so I don’t spend an hour looking at all of my different options. Too many options for me is simply too overwhelming. I need to have a plan before I ever start towards to door or I may wander off the path into total chaos. The same mentality is found Psalm 1 as it presents quite the opposite of the gas station option; it only presents two ways to live: the way of the world or the way of the Word. Those who “walk in the way of the wicked, stand in the way of sinners, and sit in the seat of scoffers” are simply people oriented around the world’s values. Spend time today looking at the options of life as either of the world or of God.
Pray
Almighty God, thank you for your Word and thank you for giving us a life full of choices. We find that in the very beginning of Genesis that you have given us choices to make through our lives. We pray that we can choose correctly and choose the ways that lead to life and happiness that is found in you. We pray this all in Jesus’ name, Amen.
