As you quiet yourself for this brief time, be willing to be open to God in whatever way that may take place.

Psalm 23
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
3 he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.
Reflect
I once heard the legend of the overflowing cup. In times long gone by, if your enemy was after you, you ran to the house of a friend. If the friend set the table, you were considered to be safe. For some reason, it was considered rude for the enemy to enter the friend’s house. Never interrupt a dinner party. When the table was set, they would put out the cup and that how full that cup was let you know how long you could stay. An empty cup let you know you were only welcome for a very short while. A full cup meant you could stay as long as you want.
I have never been chased by one of my enemies. I have never had to depend on the defense of my friends. I would hope that they would set the table for me. Who knows, there could be some doors slammed in my face.
We are told that God sets the table for us. That the table is set in front of all our enemies. If we ever wonder how long God is going to take care of us all we have to do is look at the cup. That cup isn’t just full. That cup is overflowing. God is telling our enemies that we are taken care of forever. That is love.
Pray
Protective and loving God, that you for setting the table for us. We know that your love and protection is for ever. Show us ways to share that love and protection to other.
Go with God!
