Exodus 17:1-7
17 From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 The people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” 3 But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?” 4 So Moses cried out to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” 5 The Lord said to Moses, “Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled and tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Reflect
Something about reading this text and thinking about the current world I live in made me identify with these people. Almost like I have found old friends to commiserate with. I know, my life isn’t as bad as the oppressed people without water. Sometimes I just need to be dramatic.
I look around and think about all of the people I want to see and the things I want to do. I wonder what God is doing in this time, don’t you? After reading this scripture, I think about all that God has brought me through and wonder where the rock is for me to strike.
Our rocks look different than the Israelites rocks did. Theirs were probably a brown color, large like a boulder, and possibly surrounded by other rocks. Ours are the words sung and spoken in our socially distanced worship. The card that shows up in your mailbox. Phone calls from friends. Memories made at the dinner table.
Friends, we may not need water in the desert to sustain us right now but we do need sustaining in a different way. Call the friend, send the card, spend time with God, and continue to look for rocks.
Pray
God, I know that you are going to sustain me. Open my eyes to all of the wonderful ways that you are working in my life today. Help me to see You in all things. Amen
Go with God!
