As you quiet yourself for this brief time, be willing to be open to God in whatever way that may take place.

Romans 13:1-7
13 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you wish to have no fear of the authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive its approval; 4 for it is God’s servant for your good. But if you do what is wrong, you should be afraid, for the authority does not bear the sword in vain! It is the servant of God to execute wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be subject, not only because of wrath but also because of conscience. 6 For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, busy with this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is due them—taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.
Reflect
Driving down the highway one day with my family I suddenly heard a voice from the back seat say, “Dad, you are speeding.” At that moment, the voice of my wife picked up the theme, “Now what kind of example is that to your daughter. You need to drive the speed limit.” After a slight moment of silence my wife spoke again, “And I am not paying for your ticket if you get pulled over by the highway patrol.” After another slight moment, my wife continued, “You need to obey the law, what kind of witness is that to your daughter.” This time there was no pause as my daughter finished the thought, “Yeah dad.” So, it seems that if I just obey the law, I will not get pulled over, I will not get fined, and I will be a good example to my daughter. I just have to do the right thing, and my witness before my wife and daughter remains intact. In the moments of silence that followed, I found myself saying to God, “I figure you wanted me to remember today that my witness matters, and I agree it does.”
Pray
God, you give us the opportunity to let our light shine so that others can see you living in our life. It is our witness. Help us to always understand the importance of that witness to the building of the kingdom, to the building of the church, to the building of relationships, and to the sharing of the Good News. Help us to realize that we are being watched. Help us to be thankful for that opportunity to be a witness for you in this world. It can make a difference. Amen.
