Psalm 23 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
A Psalm of David.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.
Reflect
As small children, we went to bed feeling safe because mom and dad were there with us. We could sleep well, because we knew nothing would happen to us. This scripture speaks of one who never sleeps and loves us more than our parents do, which is hard to imagine. It is a psalm of reassurance, constant care, and knowing that all things will be provided for us. God is always with us, especially during this pandemic. We doubt and we question when a loved one passes from this terrible plague. If we will remember that when Jesus was walking on water, Peter had courage for the moment to step out of the boat then he saw the storm. Jesus was walking in the storm, but Peter’s faith failed him. As the psalmist wrote about the “valley of shadow of death I will fear no evil”, God is in the valley and He is in the storm. As we adjust to this interruption of our daily lives, let’s not forget that God sees all things and knows all things. This is a time of reflection on our relationship with Him. Can we praise Him regardless of our circumstances?
Pray
Holy Father, thank you for who you are. Thank you for your love, mercy, and forgiveness. Thank you for your Son who through Him, you have worked your plan of salvation. Forgive us when we fail you and when our faith falters. We praise you for your care in this time of uncertainty. Amen.
Go with God!
