Matthew 18: 10-14
“Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven. For the Son of Man came to save the lost. What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.”

Geraldine
Most people’s earliest memories revolve around their parents. Mine includes Geraldine, or Dean as everyone called her. She was my Sunday School teacher and the precious neighbor that accompanied my parents at my birth. Dean had the face and voice of an angel. I still remember her soft alto raised in harmony with Mother’s soprano at church.
Dean had a gift for loving people and serving God. Even at 3 years old, I recognized that, flourishing under her care and counsel. Then one Sunday she stood me before our church congregation to retell my Sunday School lesson from the previous hour. Without hesitation or fear I spontaneously did what she asked because I trusted her completely.
Several years later I returned to my home community and the small CP church that had served as the instrument of God to provide me with deep spiritual roots. Dean never lost her angelic expression and soft alto voice even though she lived through the death of her husband and only children, a set of twin boys. Because of her Godly example and love, I was drawn back into the fold, eventually becoming her Adult Sunday School teacher.
This passage of scripture reminds me of the precious opportunity each Christian has in service of God by nurturing His young ones. In a time when the sanctity of life has been forfeited in exchange for vanity of life, this is an even higher calling. “Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones…it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.”
Pray
Abba Father, Creator of all, hear the prayer of Your servant. Place your hand of mercy and protection especially on the youngest and most vulnerable of Your children. Raise up leaders that advocate for them and provide Your protection as they answer the call to leadership. In Jesus precious name I pray, Amen
