1 Samuel 3:1-20
Reflect
Consider these two statements: “The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread.” And “…he did not yet know the Lord.” If you read the Scripture you know these statements were from Biblical times and were talking of Samuel. Nonetheless, could not these same statements be made about many folks today? As I read this story, I noticed that three times God spoke to Samuel. Three times he took the voice to be that of Eli. It took the wisdom of a mature, wise person to realize that the Lord was speaking to Samuel. Eli instructed Samuel on how to tune in to what the Lord wanted. Maybe we need to learn to say, “Speak for your servant is listening.” Do you think our world would be considerably different if all of God’s children were saying, “Speak for your servant is listening.” Maybe, the word of the Lord is not so rare these days. Maybe if we learned to listen, we would hear God speaking more often. Speak Lord, I am listening. A simple concept that could make a radical difference in our lives. I hear your voice calling in the night. Now I am listening. Lord, let it be.
Pray
Dear God, forgive me for the times I mistook your voice for someone else or something else that seemed to be calling me. I have failed to hear you on many occasions. Now, I really am trying to listen. Speak to me Lord. I am your servant and want to do as you tell me. Help me to truly tune in to Your voice. “Speak for your servant is listening.” Amen and amen.
