Psalm 98 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
A Psalm.
O sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvelous things.
His right hand and his holy arm
have gotten him victory.
The Lord has made known his victory;
he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the victory of our God.
Reflect
“Any theology that does not lead to song is, at a fundamental level, a flawed theology.”― J.I. Packer
I remember talking with another pastor and the pastor asked me how to deal with feelings of disappointment when the church, or people in it, hurt you. It’s a great question because if we are not careful as ministers we can use our influence or the power of the pulpit as a way to “put people in their place.”
I thought a moment and I said, in the past when this has happened, I would sing hymns. After thinking more about that answer I realized that when I have met the biggest disappointments or achievements in my life it led to song. I am not a great singer, but I can play any CD player or navigate any streaming song service on the internet. I will leave a couple of quotes about music from Martin Luther here to end this devotion. A song I often find myself singing is the Doxology and “Come Thou Fount.” A new song I have been introduced to is “Reckless love of God.” Maybe start your day off with a song today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiw_UH_QQEQ
“We can mention only one point (which experience confirms), namely, that next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. No greater commendation than this can be found — at least not by us. After all, the gift of language combined with the gift of song was only given to man to let him know that he should praise God with both word and music, namely, by proclaiming [the Word of God] through music.”–Martin Luther
“Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.” — Martin Luther
Pray
God, by your word everything was created, as we are created in your image let us create something beautiful to your glory. Let us create songs, and poetry, and art that is inspired by your love. Let us contribute to making this world beautiful and so testify to your great love. Amen
