Luke 17:5-10 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
“Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table’? Would you not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink’? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’”
Reflect
Faith is wonderful in the life of a Christian if it is executed by action. As the scripture says, faith without works is dead. You may have faith of God in your spirit, but if you don’t act on what you believe, it profits nothing. Others cannot see your faith. We are witnesses by our words as well actions. We are the only Bible anyone may read. The Apostle Paul was not ashamed to call himself a slave to Christ. If we call Jesus Master, then we too are slaves to Christ as he bought and paid for us with his life on the cross. We do not belong to ourselves, we belong to Christ. Not only out of love for what he has done for us, but it is our duty to serve him. This scripture says that we should remain humble and not expect a congratulations or thank you from Jesus because we did our duty. Our reward will come on the day of judgment not while we are here on earth. Our blessings should be knowing that we have served him out of love and in witnessing the work God does in people through us in Jesus’ name.
Pray
My Lord and Master, forever keep me humble and mindful that my goal in life is to serve you in whatever direction you give me. I pray that the faith that I have in you can be seen by others and will draw them to you. When my faith weakens, help my unbelief so that I will not fail you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
