Luke 20:45-21:4 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
In the hearing of all the people he said to the disciples, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
He looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”
Reflect
What can you do with two very small copper coins? Two pennies used to buy a little piece of bubble gum and it could buy you a stamp sometime before that. Two very small copper coins do not purchase very much these days. It takes at least 100 very small copper coins to purchase a drink at some fast-food chains.
Two very small copper coins were all this widow had to live on. She gave it to honor God. What a generous woman!! What a trusting soul that she would give all that she had to God, trusting that God would provide all she needed. For as long as this story is told, she is remembered for being generous and faithful.
Two very small copper coins given in faith, an example of the kind of radical faith we are to have. We who clench our fists around all that we claim as ours daring anyone to try to take it with our security systems and locks. This poor widow opened her hand and dropped two very small copper coins in the temple treasury. What might we be able to give if we opened our hands as she did?
Pray
Dear Loving God,
You give to us so generously. Help us to return to you just as generously. Help us to be as faithful as this widow who had so little but gave so much! We are grateful for out blessings and want to much to be generous as you have taught us, And yet we don’t have the budget to fulfill the missions you give us. Help us to be radically faithful, trusting you to provide!! Amen
