2 Peter 3:8-13 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.
Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.
Reflect
Today was a day of waiting. I woke up early and headed to an appointment with a physician where I was early. My appointment was for 8 am, but I saw the Dr at 10 am. In the drive-through, they pulled me up and would bring me my order as soon as it was ready. My order fell through the cracks, and fifteen minutes later I walked in to check on it and they told me to wait for 10 more minutes so they could cook some fresh fries. Then I visited a widow, who had just lost her husband. After our initial salutations, we sat in silence. We sat in grief together, and, we waited. We waited in the Lord.
These moments of waiting were not equal. Our God does not overschedule patients or Forget Chicken sandwich orders. And, Christ certainly does not leave a grieving widow hanging. No, the Lord’s timing is perfect. It does not bend to our whims or frenzy. It does not rush to assuage our frailty. It takes the perfect time, to meet our needs in the perfect way according to God’s good and perfect will. May we wait upon the Lord and trust in his grace.
Pray
Oh God, creator of all time, may we yield our lives to you, trusting in your love and mercy, and may we find it a peaceful and restorative place to be when we wait in your presence. Amen
