Matthew 6:19-24 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
“No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
Reflect
You can’t take it with you. One time I heard a funny story from Jerry Scott. A husband told his wife that he wanted to take it all with him when he died and upon his death, she wrote a check for the full amount of the bank account and buried him with it. We can’t take it with us when we go. For many that’s not the issue, they want to take care of their children and leave them an inheritance, but even in that, I hope people want to leave the real inheritance that matters of continuing in the Covenant of Grace in Faith in Christ.
This covenant of Grace that calls us to faith in Christ and into action in this world asks us to invest in people both spiritually and physically. We are to concern ourselves with all of these aspects of life rather than the things that pass away. The whole being of a person is something that is often dealt with to one extreme or the other. Some strictly worry about the spiritual especially in evangelism and others only worrying about the bodies and politics of people in liberation theology. However, both the body and spirit of people are important. When we focus on one only it is a disservice to the other. As Christians, we are to be concerned with the whole being of a person. So we ought to leave a lasting inheritance which stands on the Rock of Christ and His church rather than on riches which once spent are gone.
Pray
Lord help us to not worry about things out of our hands help us to care about others and into invest in both their Spiritual and physical welfare.
Go with God!
