Luke 8:22-25 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they put out, and while they were sailing he fell asleep. A windstorm swept down on the lake, and the boat was filling with water, and they were in danger. They went to him and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he woke up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were afraid and amazed, and said to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?”
Reflect
Have you ever been somewhere that made you ask the question, “What am I doing here?” Or, “What have I gotten myself into?” I seem to ask myself that question far more often than I would like. But, I am learning something about those situations. I am learning that they have purpose.
When Jesus led his disciples to the other side of the lake, he was taking them to a place they were unsure about. It was a place that their parents probably told them not to go. But, Jesus led them there and there was a divine purpose for it.
Sometimes the Spirit leads to places that make us uncomfortable, places that make us wonder why we are there. But regardless of how that place or the company makes us feel, there is a purpose for being there. It might just be your opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. It might be your time to shine.
Pray
Amazing Sustainer, lead us to places that make us uncomfortable. Forgive us for often questioning your purpose. We ask that you give us confidence in fulfilling your call to discipleship. Give us strength when we are weak and enthusiasm to serve in areas that challenge us. And, let us be a bright reflection of Christ wherever we are. In His name we lift our prayer, AMEN
