Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow.  If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit.  So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.  So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.

Reflect

If we remember yesterday’s reading from Galatians 5, then we’ll see that today’s reading is the natural outcome of Paul’s logic. Remember, Paul tells us that if we are living by the Spirit, then we won’t gratify the desires of our flesh and it won’t rule over us (Galatians 5:16).

In today’s reading, Paul starts off by telling us not to sow to our flesh (which essentially means not to give in to decisions and ideas that are carnal and only seek to serve our own interests), but then Paul tells us instead to sow to the Spirit. Sowing to the Spirit for Paul means doing good because if you are focused on the interests of others then you’re not focused on yourself.

A Christian comedian once said that one of his pagan friends told him, “Man, I don’t believe in the Bible, it’s just a book of ‘Do’s and ‘Don’t’s.” The Christian comedian responded by saying, “Yeah, but if you spend all your time doing to the ‘do’s then you won’t have time to do the ‘don’t’s.” I think that’s what Paul is saying here.

Listen to the Holy Spirit. Pray that the Lord would give you opportunities to work for the good of others in your community, in your church, and in your family.

Pray

Gracious and Holy God, according to Your word, You have created us in Christ for good works that have been prepared for us (Ephesians 2:10). I pray today that You would open avenues for us to work for the good of those around us. I pray that the Holy Spirit would use our words and actions to bring hope and healing to those who need to encounter the love of Your Son, Jesus Christ. It’s in His lovely and precious name that we pray these things. Amen.
