Reflect

Often we associate wisdom with age and lived experience. The wisest among our cultures are often our elders — and for good reason. The collection of knowledge and experience should yield prudence and enlightenment.

But the good news for followers of God is that wisdom, and thus knowledge and understanding, are not just available to the aged and elderly. Because God is the source of all things, that goes for wisdom, too. As Christians, we can acquire wisdom from a Holy God because God promises these things to God’s people.

Our text does seem to come with a catch: this promised wisdom and discernment is reserved for the “upright,” those who “walk blamelessly,” and the “faithful ones.” We have a part in receiving God’s gift as well, making sure we prepare our hearts, our minds, and our souls to be able to comprehend God’s generous and specific gift.

Rock of Ages, we give you thanks today for your steadfast love, your overwhelming kindness, and your constant goodness. We praise you for gifting us with your Spirit who helps us become wise and understanding members of your Kingdom. Gift us with more of your knowledge so that we can be a blessing to others. Amen.
