Jeremiah 50:17-20 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Israel is a hunted sheep driven away by lions. First the king of Assyria devoured it, and now at the end King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon has gnawed its bones. Therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I am going to punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I punished the king of Assyria. I will restore Israel to its pasture, and it shall feed on Carmel and in Bashan, and on the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead its hunger shall be satisfied. In those days and at that time, says the Lord, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and none shall be found; for I will pardon the remnant that I have spared.

Reflect

Jeremiah describes a brief history of Israel and God says that he is going to restore Israel. All sins will be forgiven for the remnant He will spare. The remnant in Revelation 7. Now we ask ourselves how does this relate to me? In the book of Jude, he goes into a long line of persecutions and tribulations that Christians will encounter in their walk with the Lord. He also tells us what we should do about those things – nothing.

We are to continue to do the work that the Lord commanded us to do; help those who doubt; give aid to the needy, and snatch people from the fire. In Jeremiah, Israel was helpless when it came to being captured and enslaved by enemy forces, but God told them that he would destroy the enemy and restore Israel. There is very little we can do about the scoffers and revilers who try to oppress our lives and hold us captive spiritually preventing us from doing the Lord’s work. Jesus, said I am with you until the ends of the earth. He will not forsake us as God did not forsake Israel. We are to march on and rejoice.

Pray

Holy Father thank you for being our champion in the face of adversity. I believe you are able, help my unbelief. When trials and troubles come, help me to be as the scripture says, “wise as a serpent but harmless as a dove”, that I not act out in the flesh against those who are your enemy. Through it all, I give you praise and glory. In Jesus name, Amen.
