2 Peter 3:8-13 (NRSV)

But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.

Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

Reflect

As I read this passage, I couldn’t help but think of the Book of Revelation. I must admit that I have never been a fan of Revelation because I think the Christian community has put more time and effort into understanding the end of time rather than the present time God has given to us. I suspect that most people have spent more time discussing and analyzing the Book of Revelation and the end of time than the Gospels. I suppose it is simply our human desire to know what’s going to happen. However, my philosophy on the end times is that only God knows when the end of time will come. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then you know how the story will end for you. Therefore, let’s live in the present so when the end does come, God will find us at work. Let us also learn patience in our work, for as this passage makes clear, the concept of time for God and for humans is extremely different.

Pray

Dear Lord, thank you for the privilege of serving you. Help us to remember that an end is coming and that righteousness will come with it. May we be diligent in your work, understanding that all good things will come to those who serve you in your precious time. Amen.
