Luke 4:42-44 (NRSV)
At daybreak he departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowds were looking for him; and when they reached him, they wanted to prevent him from leaving them. But he said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose.” So he continued proclaiming the message in the synagogues of Judea.
Reflect
In this scripture, Jesus was overwhelmed during the night with the sick and exorcising demonic forces ruling over peoples’ lives. He spiritually needed to separate himself from the people and spend time with God not only for the reviving of his own spirit, but for continued direction his Father would give him through prayer. Jesus knew what his mission was. He needed quality time with his Father and his God. We also need quality time with God in prayer. We love our families very much, but their needs and wants can be overwhelming at times, taxing our spirit. As each day begins, we need to make time to communicate with God asking for strength and wisdom to meet the day and its needs. As each day ends, we need to take time to thank God for the blessings of the day. Our spirit needs the same alone quiet time with God that Jesus took. As was Jesus, God has also given us a mission—to be witnesses to the lost and troubled. We need His wise counsel and the peace we receive in having a close relationship with God.
Pray
Father God, forgive me when I allow my world to become so busy and chaotic that I fail to come to a quiet place for prayer. My spirit and soul need the peace and wisdom you have in abundance that comes from an active prayer life with you. You are most Holy and most Sovereign, and in you I place my trust and hope. In Jesus’s Holy name, Amen.
Go with God!
