Hebrews 10:26-31 (NRSV)
For if we willfully persist in sin after having received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. Anyone who has violated the law of Moses dies without mercy “on the testimony of two or three witnesses.” How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by those who have spurned the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant by which they were sanctified, and outraged the Spirit of grace? For we know the one who said, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Reflect
I am five years older than my brother. As children there were days when we played well together and other days when we got into mischief. At times that mischief led to punishment, but my brother got off easier. I was told, “You are older. You know better than to do that.” At the time, I thought my parents’ reasoning was completely unfair, but now as a parent myself, I understand a bit more of what they were thinking.
The same holds true for us as Christians. When we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are made new and are expected to life our lives differently. As we grow in our understanding of our faith, we, too, must grow so that we live our lives as a reflection of our knowledge.
Maya Angelou said, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” Each day we make choices about how we live our life. We are free to choose, but what a travesty it is when we knowingly choose to live in a way that is not pleasing to God. As Christians may we leave our old stuff behind, never willfully living in sin when we know right from wrong.
Pray
God, keep us close to you. Guide us in our daily living so that it is pleasing to you. Direct us as we grow in knowledge of our faith so that we do not turn back to our old ways, but walk in a way that speaks to the newness we have through you. Amen.
Go with God.
