Focus
Slow your breathing and become aware of the taking in and letting out of your breath. Focus on putting things aside so you will be open to what God is saying to you today.
Read
John 3:31-36 (NRSV)
The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony. Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified this, that God is true. He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God’s wrath.
Reflect
Are you exhausted? Thanksgiving trips, shopping and travel have been a part of our lives this week. We are ready to settle down to more normal living, but Sunday is coming and then Advent follows.
Honestly, this text exhausts me. I chose it because it is complex and has a lot of controversy around it. Who of us hasn’t at one time had some controversy or complex events in our lives. Maybe you have some right now.
Despite the complexity and controversy, I want to point out two great truths from this passage. First, God is true. God has given many promises. Do you trust God to fulfill those promises? Believing God is true is central to our faith. Second, John shares that Jesus has come to share God’s true word of grace and forgiveness. On top of this, Jesus came to give the Spirit of truth to all those who believe.
Take a moment to relax and get your breath. Then focus on the things you know are true. God loves you!
Pray
May the God’s Spirit give you strength in the busy season and help you to focus on the things that are true. Amen.
Go with God!
