Prepare yourself to discern what is and what is not of God today. Still yourself so you can hear how God is calling you.

Job 38:1-7 [34-41] (NRSV)
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind:
“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
Gird up your loins like a man,
I will question you, and you shall declare to me.
“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone
when the morning stars sang together
and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?
Reflect
Because I’m God. That’s why! No ifs, ands, or buts, end of sentence, period. God tells Job, without excuse, exactly who God is. In this passage, God does not exhibit the loving, caring, non-judgmental characteristics we like to see. Instead, God is taking charge and saying to Job, “I am God. I can do the following things because I am God.”
This harshness we read seems to be just what Job needed. Instead of lamenting and feeling sorry for himself after God told him these things, Job steps out of his grief and darkness. He begins to live his life again.
How often do we question what God is doing in our lives as being “the right thing?” How often do we demand to know and understand God’s plan? How often do we think we know what is best? How often do we think we are in charge? Too often.
All of us are called to trust in the Almighty – the Maker of the earth. This is not an easy task when life’s disasters are hitting us every way possible. When catastrophes enter our lives, we question who is in control.
Our faith is dependent upon us remembering God is in control. It is important to model Job’s actions once he awoke from his dismal state of despair. He acknowledged God and began to live again.
What is keeping you from living again? Are you fully acknowledging God is in control?
Pray
Leading and guiding Spirit, as we spin out of control in this world we live in and we begin to question you, help us to remember who is in control of our lives. Thank you for making us rely on you, trust you and bring us out of darkness and despair. Amen.
Go with God!
