Psalm 99 (NRSV)
The LORD is king; let the peoples tremble!
He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!
The LORD is great in Zion;
he is exalted over all the peoples.
Let them praise your great and awesome name.
Holy is he!
Mighty King, lover of justice,
you have established equity;
you have executed justice
and righteousness in Jacob.
Extol the LORD our God;
worship at his footstool.
Holy is he!
Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
Samuel also was among those who called on his name.
They cried to the LORD, and he answered them.
He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud;
they kept his decrees,
and the statutes that he gave them.
O LORD our God, you answered them;
you were a forgiving God to them,
but an avenger of their wrongdoings.
Extol the LORD our God,
and worship at his holy mountain;
for the LORD our God is holy.
Reflect
This is a powerful psalm of praise. The words evoke images of strength and might. It reminds us of God’s sovereignty and greatness. Yet even in the light of the Lord’s great strength, God answers our cries, for which the psalmist offers praises. Our God is great and mighty and worthy of praise. In our weakness, God listens. God hears our cries and answers us.
In verse 4 the psalmist describes God as a “lover of justice” a God who has “established equity.” These words challenge me to take on the day as a lover of justice. A lover of coffee—check. A lover of my dog—absolutely. A lover of kindness—sounds nice. A lover of justice—wow. That idea pushes me. How can we enter the day as a lover of justice, a person who seeks justice and equality for our neighbors, whomever they may be?
Praise God for hearing our cry; praise God for being a lover of justice.
Pray
We praise you, our Mighty God! Hear our shouts of praise in moments of light and darkness and open our ears to your answer. Help us to be lovers of justice in our communities. Amen.
Go with God.
