Mark 4:21-25 (NRSV)
He said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under the bushel basket, or under the bed, and not on the lampstand? For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. Let anyone with ears to hear listen!” And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. For to those who have, more will be given; and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.”
Reflect
As we grow in our understanding of Christ, the light that we can share in the world also grows. We are to share that light with others, helping to the dispel darkness that some people try to use to hide evil deeds.
Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his life to stamp out the darkness of segregation and to shine the light of integration. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a shining example of one who sacrificed his life to stop the brutality of Hitler. Mother Teresa gave the light of Christ to the downtrodden of India. Fanny Crosby, a prolific hymn writer, has been described “as a blind lady whose heart can see splendidly in the sunshine of God’s love.” Many others, some known only to God, have worked to shine the light of Christ in our world.
We see lights that shine in spite of living in darkness. We see lights that shine from difficult circumstances. How does that speak to us today?
Pray
God, may your Spirit fill me and guide me to be a beacon for you, no matter what. Amen.
Go with God.
