Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it—not for sordid gain but eagerly. Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for

“God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.”

Reflect

Many times I have felt the need to be right, which means that my pride stood in the way of being humble. Humility can be one of the hardest attitudes to have. In a world where being right is often how people are judged, it is even harder. The scriptures tell us to tend willingly the flock of God that is in our charge. The scripture tells us to be examples to the flock and clothe ourselves with humility in our dealings with one another. One must set aside his or her pride so as to focus on the needs of others for this to be possible.

What kind of example did you set for others today? What example can you set for others tomorrow? Humility is shown through the way we live and the way we treat others.

Pray

As we turn our eyes toward you, Lord, help us to see past ourselves to become humble. May humility guide us as we tend to our flocks. Amen.
