Psalm 150 (NRSV)
Praise the LORD!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty firmament!
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his surpassing greatness!
Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!
Praise him with clanging cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let everything that breathes praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD!
Reflect
Music always seems to make everything better. It can make or break a scene in a movie. It can help get you that last mile when you are running a race. It can calm you in times of trouble. Music is the universal language that can speak to us all.
I once watched a video that was in a different language, but based on the music and the actions taken, I was able to understand what was happening in the scene. I could understand even though I had no idea what they were saying, which demonstrates how powerful music can be.
In this psalm, we are encouraged to praise God with music. We are to praise God with trumpets, lutes, harps, and tambourines—seemingly all kinds of instruments. Even this psalmist knew that music was an important way to express our deepest feelings for God.
Pray
As you pray, listen to the music around you and praise God in it. You may also be moved to sing your own prayer to praise God!
Dear Lord, thank you for the music in our lives, music that shows us how wonderful life can be in every way. Please continue to bless our lives with music. May we praise you with the music that you bring us. Amen.
Go with God.
