Focus
As you quiet yourself for this brief time, be willing to be open to God in whatever way that may take place.
Read
Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22 (NRSV)
O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
those he redeemed from trouble
and gathered in from the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
…
Some were sick through their sinful ways,
and because of their iniquities endured affliction;
they loathed any kind of food,
and they drew near to the gates of death.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress;
he sent out his word and healed them,
and delivered them from destruction.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love,
for his wonderful works to humankind.
And let them offer thanksgiving sacrifices,
and tell of his deeds with songs of joy.
Reflect
In White Christmas, one of my favorite movies, Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney sing “Counting My Blessings.” When you’re worried and you can’t sleep, they recommend that you count your blessings instead of sheep. What a concept! When troubles overwhelm you—count your blessings. When it seems that evil surrounds you—count your blessings. When you are sick of heart, mind, or body—count your blessings. When relationships break down, when the world is confusing and hurtful, when uncertainty clouds your vision and keeps you from seeing God—count your blessings. While you will find God in the midst of your blessings, you will also find God in the midst of your hurts and brokenness. God will lead you through any obstacles that may stand in your way. But never forget to remember the blessings that we sometimes just don’t see. When you recognize your own blessings, it is so much easier to share those blessings with others. By sharing your blessings, you inspire others to count their blessings and share as well.
Pray
In your generosity, O God, you pour blessings upon us. May we live lives of gratitude and thanksgiving. May we look beyond misfortune, confusion, and the troubles the world puts in our path. May we seek your face and share our blessings. We give you the praise and the glory. Amen.
Go with God.
