Mark 8:27-30 (NRSV)
Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” And they answered him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.” And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.
Reflect
For many of us, Saturday is a day to run errands. Since I live 20 miles south of a larger city, I often make trips into the city or surrounding areas in order to find those things that I need.
Jesus and his disciples were traveling to the various villages in Cesarea Philippi. As they walked, Jesus asked, “Who do people say that I am?” They answered, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”
“But who do you say that I am?” asked Jesus.
Many people in the world may still say that Jesus was a prophet or Elijah or even like John the Baptist. But here is what I know: Jesus walks with us wherever we go and he wants to know who we say that he is.
At the time of Peter’s confession, Jesus wanted it to remain just between the disciples and their own realization. Now Christ is to be revealed to the world.
Enjoy your travels and remember, the Lord is with you.
Pray
O God, today we pray for safe travels. Make us mindful that you are always with us wherever we go. May we rejoice in knowing the gift of your son, Jesus Christ, through whom we find forgiveness, mercy, and grace. Help us boldly to proclaim our salvation and preach the good news to all we see. We pray this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Go with God.
