Psalm 5 (NRSV)
Give ear to my words, O LORD;
give heed to my sighing.
Listen to the sound of my cry,
my King and my God,
for to you I pray.
O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice;
in the morning I plead my case to you, and watch.
For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
evil will not sojourn with you.
The boastful will not stand before your eyes;
you hate all evildoers.
You destroy those who speak lies;
the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful.
But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
will enter your house,
I will bow down toward your holy temple
in awe of you.
Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness
because of my enemies;
make your way straight before me.
For there is no truth in their mouths;
their hearts are destruction;
their throats are open graves;
they flatter with their tongues.
Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of their many transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
so that those who love your name may exult in you.
For you bless the righteous, O LORD;
you cover them with favor as with a shield.
Reflect
“In the morning you hear my voice….” What a beautiful thought that as I sit here on my porch, cup of coffee in one hand and God’s word in the other, I can be assured that God hears my voice.
David asked God to lead him in righteousness and to help him overcome his enemies. I don’t know about you, but I have many enemies: greed, selfishness, anger, and a host of others that I encounter daily. David said there was no truth in the mouths of his enemies; their hearts are destruction. Perhaps if we took the time to recognize our enemies, we would see that fear, greed, gluttony, or whatever it may be has NO truth in its mouth. These things thrive on bringing lies and destruction to our lives. If we could see them for who they truly are, perhaps we would be a little more excited that God hears us every morning.
The truth is that God listens to us all the time and will lead us down the path of righteousness. Today rejoice as David rejoiced in triumph, singing for joy. Know that God hears you and helps you overcome. Many blessings!
Pray
Precious Lord, we know you hear us all day long. Our cries are heard, our thoughts and petitions are made known to you. Thank you, Lord, for giving us triumph over our enemies. Lord, we rejoice in you today, we sing songs of your glory, and give you all the honor and praise. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Go with God.
