Exodus 15:19-21 (NRSV)
When the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his chariot drivers went into the sea, the LORD brought back the waters of the sea upon them; but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground.
Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing. And Miriam sang to them:
“Sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously;
horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.”
Reflect
Okay, so maybe the lyrics don’t exactly seem life-affirming, singing as they do of horse and rider being drowned by God. But the image of women dancing, singing, and playing tambourines in joyful triumph is one that resonates with all who have been rescued from the brink of disaster. The disaster may indeed have been life-threatening for us or our loved ones, or perhaps it was getting a job when we desperately needed one, or passing an exam we thought we had flunked. Regardless of the disaster from which we have been rescued, joy is joy and we love how it feels.
Pray
Thank you, dear God, for music, singing, and dancing as exuberant expressions of joy. Amen.
Go with God.
