Psalm 8 (NRSV)
O LORD, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O LORD, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Reflect
Since General Assembly met in Florida this year, we left a few days early so that we could spend some time at the ocean. I am always amazed by the ocean—the constancy of the waves and tides, the usually soothing sounds, the many creatures who live in its waters, and the power. Watching and listening to the ocean, it was easy to be aware of the majesty of God in creation.
Earlier this year I visited the Great Smoky Mountains. The mountains and valleys with their cascades of water and all of the many wildflowers in bloom caused me to pause and reflect on the awesomeness of God’s creation.
But how aware of God’s creation am I amidst the daily busyness of life? I commute over an hour to and from work daily. There are some days I fail to pay attention to the majesty of creation…the sun, the birds, or even the frost on the landscape. Let’s remember always to take time to sing praises to our Creator.
Pray
LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! I praise you for your masterpiece of Creation. I praise you for the animals, the oceans, the mountains, your creations. Thank you. Amen.
Go with God.
