Psalm 133 (NRSV)
How very good and pleasant it is
when kindred live together in unity!
It is like the precious oil on the head,
running down upon the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down over the collar of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon,
which falls on the mountains of Zion.
For there the LORD ordained his blessing,
life forevermore.
Reflect
As a lover of music and a member of a choir since I was 13 years old, I know the importance of listening to one another and blending together when singing. Each person in a choir has his or her own part in the music. When everyone sings in harmony, the result can be beautiful and uplifting! Conversely, if one person sings louder than the others or doesn’t know his or her part, it can be anything but beautiful to hear. Watching my husband direct over 100 middle school children at a band concert always puts me in awe of what they can accomplish together! Watching my favorite college football team win against a big rival always excites me because the players are working together as a team!
The psalmist was talking about how wonderful it is when we live together in unity. How good and pleasing it is to the Lord. We don’t hear much about unity in the news these days. So much of our news is about discord and even hatred spewed out on others—many times without even taking a moment to consider the other person’s point of view. We don’t all have to believe the same, look the same, or act the same. If we could only value one another and remember that we all have a place in “the choir” or on “the team” of God’s earthly kingdom, how beautiful and uplifting that would be.
Pray
Lord, we know you desire for us to love one another and live in harmony with one another. Help us to strive to be tolerant of differences, to be slow to get angry with one another, and to remember that we are all your children. Help us to love others as you love us. Amen.
Go with God.
