Acts 18:24-28 (NRSV)

Now there came to Ephesus a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria. He was an eloquent man, well-versed in the scriptures. He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord; and he spoke with burning enthusiasm and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the Way of God to him more accurately. And when he wished to cross over to Achaia, the believers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. On his arrival he greatly helped those who through grace had become believers, for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the scriptures that the Messiah is Jesus.

Reflect

Knowledge is a wonderful thing and knowledge of the Bible among the most wonderful, but none of us can know everything or understand all we know. Apollos not only knew the scriptures, but was able to express himself both accurately and eloquently. Those who stopped to listen to his well-spoken words gained a better understanding of the good news of Jesus.

Priscilla and Aquila were among those who heard him, but having a more complete understanding of the word of God, they had to make a choice. They could have said nothing and allowed Apollos to continue. No harm, no foul, right? They could have begun a public debate and embarrassed him and confused the listeners. Instead they made a third choice. They asked to speak to him privately, sharing their deeper understanding and wider experience.

Apollos accepted their instruction and went on to spread the word of God in Achaia. There he was able to help the new believers and “powerfully” stand up to the Jews who attempted to deny that Jesus was the Messiah. May we be willing to listen to the wisdom of others and share our own ideas respectfully.

Pray

Dear Lord, Give me a thirst for learning and understanding your word and remind me that you often speak through my brothers and sisters. When my understanding differs from others, show me if and when to speak, and filter my words with your wisdom. Above all, may my words be given with a loving heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
