Deuteronomy 8:1-10 (NRSV)
This entire commandment that I command you today you must diligently observe, so that you may live and increase, and go in and occupy the land that the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors. Remember the long way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments. He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. The clothes on your back did not wear out and your feet did not swell these forty years. Know then in your heart that as a parent disciplines a child so the LORD your God disciplines you. Therefore keep the commandments of the LORD your God, by walking in his ways and by fearing him. For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in valleys and hills, a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, where you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you may mine copper. You shall eat your fill and bless the LORD your God for the good land that he has given you.
Reflect
A small Christian camp in Texas had dreams of providing a facility that could minister to children with special needs. Summer after summer they rented campgrounds, watching the need to own a facility mount as the number of children who came continued to grow. Many prayed for God’s guidance for a permanent home, and praises were lifted when land was donated to the camp. Then it rained—a hard rain, a 100-year flood kind of rain. The beautiful land for the future camp was under water. As many searched for understanding in what was thought to be God’s plan, the owners of a nearby retreat center were also making a decision to sell their beloved property. Their land was on a hilltop and had existing buildings. The two parties were able to agree on sale price that matched the amount of money the camp had raised over the years. It was a place that perfectly met all the needs of the camp!
Recently I walked on the land that God blessed and promised to Camp Blessing Texas. It is a land where children with special needs come to find fun, love, and acceptance. Volunteers come to this land to serve as the hands and feet of Christ. God brought them to this place and the journey is a part of the testimony of God’s love and provision.
Whatever your journey is today, always remember that God is taking you to the Promised Land.
Pray
O God, I often forget that the journey is a part of the destination. Guide me as I grow to understand your purpose for my life. Lead me to the place you have promised. Amen
Go with God.
