Hebrews 6:13-20 (NRSV)

When God made a promise to Abraham, because he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, saying, “I will surely bless you and multiply you.” And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Human beings, of course, swear by someone greater than themselves, and an oath given as confirmation puts an end to all dispute. In the same way, when God desired to show even more clearly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it by an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God would prove false, we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to seize the hope set before us. We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus, a forerunner on our behalf, has entered, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Reflect

There is no reason to doubt that God keeps promises. The author of Hebrews wanted those who read his letter to be sure of God’s faithfulness. God’s word is law, God’s promises are unbreakable. As Christians, God has promised us so much, yet we often lose hold of our hope and anchor and drift away from God.

One of the most beautiful symbols in the events of Good Friday, for me, is the tearing of the Temple curtain from the top down. Through this action, God opened the holiest part of the Temple to all people, thus removing any barriers between God and those who seek God. The belief in our Savior, Jesus Christ, is our anchor. Because of Jesus we can enter into God’s presence.

Are we seizing the hope available in Christ? Are we letting Jesus be the anchor of our lives? Are we drifting away from our purpose and God’s presence? Are we forgetting to trust in the promises of God?

Spirit of the living God, you are the fulfillment of God’s promise to all Christians. You dwell in my heart. Thank you for praying with me and for me. Open my heart and mind to your presence so that I might follow your leading, so that I might know God’s will for my actions, thoughts, and words. Help me to live my life daily more aware and more in tune with your presence. Amen.
