Matthew 11:28-30 (NRSV)
“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Reflect
The WOW (Word on Wednesday) program at the Manchester Cumberland Presbyterian Church is totally dependent on volunteers. People serve as teachers, bus drivers, cooks, dish washers, music leaders, table parents, recreation leaders, decorators, homework helpers, and dinner deans.
Most of our volunteers work full time before arriving at church on Wednesdays to work another three to four hours. From insurance agents, school teachers, and engineers to eighty-year-old retirees, our volunteers must be weary and burdened with the busyness of their own lives. However, they graciously give of their time to carry on the work of the church, and they come away at the end of the day with renewed energy.
The disciples whom Jesus sent out to witness to the world must have been weary from traveling and witnessing to unrepentant people. However, Jesus promised them rest for their souls. Like these early Christians, we can find rest by allowing Christ to share part of the burden. Just as oxen are yoked together because two animals can pull a load better than one, we can ease our burdens when we share them with Christ.
When we think we are too spent to volunteer, God promises all of us who serve God a renewed strength and rest for our souls.
Pray
Dear Lord, thank you for all those who volunteer their time and energy to serve you. Take away their burdens and their weariness, and let them know how much they are appreciated. Amen.
Go with God.
