Luke 6:12-19 (NRSV)
Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them.
Reflect
How were you chosen? As children on a playground, you may have been chosen first or last or somewhere between, depending on who was doing the choosing. When you got older, maybe you were chosen for an honor or award based on your hard work. You applied for a job and, based on your overall skill set and interviews, you were chosen. But have you ever thought about how God chose you?
God’s does not choose us based on our skill, achievement, or wisdom. God’s choice is not dependent on how talented we are or how much potential we have. We were not chosen because of who our families are or how much stuff we own. It’s not how much we can bench press or how fast we can run. It’s not based on how smart we are or our level of education. In fact, our focus shouldn’t be on how or why we were chosen at all.
Instead, take a moment and just be thankful. For whatever reason, God has looked upon us all favorably and said today and every day, I choose you.
Pray
Merciful God, thank you for choosing us to be your people. May we live a life worthy of being chosen. Amen.
Go with God.
