John 3:31-36 (NRSV)
The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony. Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified this, that God is true. He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God’s wrath.
Reflect
There is something exhilarating about being high above the world. Whether it’s in a plane, a skyscraper, or a Ferris wheel, being above and looking down offers us a different perspective—a perspective that would be impossible without being raised up. Things look both smaller and larger. As we see the multitude of cars fly by on the interstates we realized just how big the world is and how small we are at the same time.
John asks us to consider the life of the one who came from above and has offered us an infinitely more informed perspective on our lives than even we have. Jesus, John writes, is qualified to offer his unique perspective based on two things.
First, Jesus is God’s spokesperson who has the Spirit without limit. Jesus had clear access to God because he had the Spirit of God within him. Secondly, Jesus is God’s son whom he loves and has given all things into his hands, including you and me. Jesus is worthy of being trusted!
In what area of your life are you lacking perspective today? Where do you need guidance and a word from God to sustain you when the road ahead seems unsure? May the Spirit grant us faith to “certify that God is truthful” and bring us hope of eternal life shared with God through Christ.
Pray
Gracious God, when our lives seem cloudy, give us faith to trust in you. We believe Jesus is trustworthy and that his message is directly from your lips. Show us your plan for our lives and give us faith to believe you know what’s best. In Christ’s name, Amen.
Go with God.
