Colossians 3:12-17 (NRSV)
As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Reflect
The clothes we wear are an important part of who we are. Our clothes often tell others a lot about us. They can show what kind of music we like, our favorite sports team, our favorite restaurant, or places we have visited. Our clothing may reflect our moods and our mental and physical well-being.
Far too often the spiritual “clothing” we wear shows that selfishness, greed, and anger run our lives. Our earthly world says that we should think of ourselves first. It tells us that our comfort matters more than anything else.
As Christ’s followers we are to reject the trappings that this world tells us are important. We should show the world that love, compassion, and peace are how we measure success. We are to “clothe” ourselves in humility. We are to show patience in dealing with people. In short, we are to remember the teachings of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. If we can do that, then we will be shedding our old lives and clothing ourselves in the richness of the kingdom of heaven.
Pray
Loving Lord, help us to shed our old selves, our old lives, our old insecurities. Clothe us in your righteousness and grace. Amen.
Go with God.
