Ephesians 3:14-21 (NRSV)
For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Reflect
Growing up, I met a woman who was close to 95 years old. She was about 4’ 6” tall, poor, tough, opinionated, and highly respected in the community. She had had a very difficult life. Her parents died when she was a child. She married when she was young, but her husband was a casualty of World War I. She lived in an upstairs apartment and had difficulty climbing the steps because of health issues. Despite all of the negative things in her life, her faith remained very strong. This woman’s faith was strengthened by having participated in a community of faith for her entire life. When she would become discouraged, her faith and the support of her faith community helped her to move beyond those times.
Paul prayed for the people of Ephesus, asking that God’s Spirit would give them strength while they were “rooted and grounded in love.” As Christians, we are not promised an easy life, but God has promised to be with us. Through the Holy Spirit and our community of faith, we are strengthened and can endure.
Always remember that you are not alone on this journey called life. God is with you, and through the Holy Spirit, God will give you strength to endure your hardships. By the grace and love of God, your faith will grow stronger.
Pray
Loving and gracious God, help us to become more rooted and grounded in love. Through your Spirit, strengthen us when we are weak. We call upon you to help us endure the difficult times that will come our way. Amen.
Go with God.
