John 8:12 (NRSV)
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”
Reflect
Jesus boldly claimed that he is the light, the light that shines in darkness. He further stated that if we follow him, we will not be in darkness, which is an especially compelling statement.
The media constantly bombards us with reports of tragic events that cause us to despair. We ask ourselves if circumstances will ever improve. Will our world ever be free of war? Will we ever feel safe again? How trustworthy are our leaders? What kind of world will our children and grandchildren inherit?
Jesus gives us hope in the midst of such darkness. If we trust and follow Jesus, his light will guide us even in the most difficult times. That light may come through the scripture, a kind word from a friend, a prayer offered on our behalf, or an act of kindness we offer another in Jesus’ name. We only need to seek Jesus in order to find the hope of his light. It has been promised and offered. We must receive.
May God renew an awareness of the light and love of Jesus so that you can overcome the darkness. Let this hope be exhibited in your life on a daily basis so that others will also become aware of this precious promise.
Pray
Dear God, darkness is all around us, but your light is more powerful. May our lives bear witness to the light within, and may we truly make a difference in this world through the power of your Holy Spirit. In Jesus name. Amen.
Go with God.
