Prepare yourself to discern what is and what is not of God today. Still yourself so you can hear how God is calling you.
Read
Psalm 37:1-9 (NRSV)
Do not fret because of the wicked;
do not be envious of wrongdoers,
for they will soon fade like the grass,
and wither like the green herb.
Trust in the LORD, and do good;
so you will live in the land, and enjoy security.
Take delight in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in him, and he will act.
He will make your vindication shine like the light,
and the justice of your cause like the noonday.
Be still before the LORD, and wait patiently for him;
do not fret over those who prosper in their way,
over those who carry out evil devices.
Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath.
Do not fret—it leads only to evil.
For the wicked shall be cut off,
but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land.
Reflect
If we cannot bring an end to wrongdoing in the world, then how do we manage living our lives in the midst of it? The news is filled with terrorism, bombings, and violent attacks in public places such as malls, night clubs, schools, and churches.
Daily we hear reports of murder, law enforcement violence against citizens, gang violence within the community, and violence against family members in homes. We also hear about instances of extortion, robbery, and arson.
Sometimes the amount of wrongdoing occurring in the world makes us feel helpless and hopeless, discouraged and despaired—that is, if it were not for our faith in the goodness of the Lord our God who is sovereign. Eventually, all who are wicked will be brought to their determined end. As it is often put, the wicked will cease from troubling and the weary will get some rest.
We can live with the assurance that in the end, things will work out for the good of those who trust in the Lord and who love the Lord. Sometimes we must patiently wait for the change to occur. We may have to endure a season of suffering, but we must remain confident in our faith.
Pray
Sovereign Lord, thank you for your patience, your presence, and for your participation in our lives and in the world. Because you are Lord over all, we quietly rest in your perfecting care. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Go with God.
